Five signs your small business has outgrown ad-hoc IT

September 8, 2026 · 1 min read

Plenty of small businesses start with an informal IT setup: a staff member who’s handy with computers, a router from the telco and backups that happen… sometimes. That works for a while. Here are five signs it’s stopped working.

1. The same problems keep coming back

Printers dropping off the network, Wi-Fi black spots, a PC that “just needs a restart” every morning. Recurring issues are a symptom of nobody owning the root cause.

2. Nobody is sure the backups work

A backup you haven’t test-restored is a hope, not a plan. Managed backup monitoring checks every job and alerts us when something fails.

3. Updates are “someone else’s job”

Unpatched machines are the easiest way in for attackers. Proactive support means updates are staged, tested and applied on a schedule — out of hours.

4. Staff lose hours waiting for fixes

If your team works around problems instead of reporting them, you’re paying for downtime you never see on an invoice.

5. You can’t say who has access to what

Former staff still in Microsoft 365, shared passwords on sticky notes, admin rights for everyone. A quick access review usually turns up surprises.
